Red Flag Warnings and Notice About Smoking

Alamosa, CO –  The San Luis Valley is currently experiencing conditions that have resulted in numerous Red Flag Warnings being issued over the last couple of weeks. These conditions and the issuing of Red Flag Warnings is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. This means critical fire weather conditions are happening now and will continue including strong winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures creating an extreme-risk environment for fires to start and spread rapidly.

Why this matters:

Even a small spark such as a cigarette or burning debris can quickly turn into a fast-moving wildfire under these conditions. Fires can grow out of control in minutes, putting lives, homes, and entire communities at risk.

Do NOT burn during a Red Flag Warning:

  • Open burning within city limits is prohibited
  • No trash or debris burning
  • No campfires or outdoor fire pits
  • Avoid using equipment that creates sparks
  • Properly dispose of cigarettes

Important Notice About Smoking:

Due to these extremely dry conditions, smoking on trails and in open spaces is banned until further notice. A single improperly discarded cigarette can easily ignite dry grass and start a wildfire.

What you can do:

  • Residents and businesses who pay for municipal trash services can take their yard waste to the Rickey Recycling Center
  • Stay informed on local weather alerts
  • Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately
  • Help spread the word to keep others safe
